The cat and camel exercise, often referred to as the cat-cow stretch, is a popular yoga and pilates movement that promotes flexibility and spinal health. This exercise involves moving the spine through a range of motion that mimics the arching and rounding of a cat’s back and the downward curve of a camel’s hump. To perform the exercise, start on your hands and knees in a tabletop position. As you inhale, arch your back, dropping your belly toward the floor and lifting your head and tailbone—this is the camel position. As you exhale, round your back, tucking your chin to your chest and pulling your belly button towards your spine—this is the cat position. Repeating this sequence helps improve spinal flexibility, relieve back tension, and enhance overall body awareness. It’s particularly beneficial for warming up before more intense physical activities or as a gentle stretch to alleviate stress and tension.
